The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender the Australian for the quickest lap in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who took the championship lead from Piastri by one point after his victory in Mexico City a fortnight back, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before sprint qualifying due at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, trailing 36 points Norris, ended up in P17 as his team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he spun at the fourth corner early in the session. Tsunoda slid over the exit kerbs before rotating through the escape zone, and was lucky to get away with just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the session, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner before the last turn on to the main straight. Hamilton finished practice in 19th place, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's car in third, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
