PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, Marseille struck two times in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
